Kerli

MTV only plays decent videos when I’m walking home drunk at three in the morning and turn on the TV to decompress. That’s when Kerli’s Walking On Air came through, and I fell for it instantly—the song, the video, everything about her. Couldn’t understand why she wasn’t everywhere.

She’s Estonian. Already huge in the States, charted in Switzerland, but somehow the rest of Europe just let her slip past. The song had everything you’d want: melancholy, pop hooks, her voice with an edge to it. Should’ve landed everywhere.

There’s something weird about how you discover things drunk at random hours. Mostly garbage. But sometimes something sticks because of exactly how random it was—arbitrary, stupid, perfect. Three AM MTV shuffle lands on Kerli, and suddenly you’re thinking about timing, markets, luck, all of it.

I didn’t stop thinking about her after that night.
