Genie High
Creative Silliness

It's fair to say that Enon Kawatani is a musical genius. Born in Nagasaki in 1988 and not completely averse to social scandals, he is a singer, guitarist and songwriter for the bands Indigo la End, Gesu no Kiwami Otome and the instrumental group Ichikoro, and also works as a writer for other musicians. One of my favorite bands of his, however, is Genie High.

Genie High was formed in 2018 after guitarist Ikkyu Nakajima, keyboardist Takashi Niigaki, and bassist Kunihiro Kawashima appeared regularly on the talk show Bazooka!!! hosted by drummer Kazutoyo Koyabu. The band was effectively an experiment to attract press attention - and that plan worked exquisitely.

Since the release of their debut single 片目で異常に恋してる, they have released an EP and two albums, each of which has seen some success on the Japanese charts. Genie High are all about cultural fun and creative silliness, but without taking their musicianship to the ridiculous. And that's what I like about Enon and his motley crew.
