Goodbye Sarah

MTV Europe used to mean something. Real money and energy behind fighting AIDS stigma, actual opposition to the mainstream, genuine stakes. Now it’s just ringtone ads and paywalls and firing anyone worth watching.

They cancelled Sarah Kuttner’s show, and it’s made me properly angry.

I didn’t catch every episode—honestly some of them were strange, a bit dull. But what made it important was that it existed to talk back. MTV had something on air that would tell MTV itself to fuck off, genuinely, on live television. Even if you weren’t watching that particular week, knowing it was there counted.

Sarah had a gift for just being herself without performing it. Not manufactured likeable. That’s gotten rarer on MTV, or anywhere really.

She’ll be fine. Too good not to land somewhere. But I’m hoping whatever she does next is entirely hers—no network calling shots, no gatekeepers. That’s the only place anything real happens anymore.
