After Marissa

The season four promo photos came out and Mischa Barton wasn’t in the cast list. I’d held onto this dumb hope that maybe the Marissa death was some elaborate fake-out, that she’d somehow resurface. But the photos made it official: she was gone.

The show was reshaping itself. New cast, younger characters, more focus on Kaitlin and the next generation of Newport. The O.C. had always been good at evolution and bringing in new faces, but this felt different. Marissa had been the gravitational center for three seasons, and they were just dumping her.

The season premiered in November in the States, and we wouldn’t see it until spring. I remember being genuinely curious about whether the show could work without her, whether this was a smart evolution or the beginning of the end.
