Lykke Li showed up around the same time as Ting Tings and Ladyhawke, and she landed harder with me. I have a black and white portrait of her that’s been on my wall. She talked about art being the only way to approach life as a mystery, how she’d considered fashion and painting before landing on music as her form of expression—the thing that actually needed saying. Her video then was all purity, all clarity. No excess, nothing wasted. That’s why she stuck.
