Could This Be

I made the mistake of letting Lovers Electric play in the background. Just once. Could This Be—Australian pop that sounds like the Ting Tings filtered through pure sugar and ketchup. Now that bababababa hook is in my head and I can’t get it out.

The band looks exactly like they sound: engineered cuteness, everything designed for maximum grip. The song doesn’t waste time on anything that isn’t functional. Bright production, vocals that sit between sincere and performed, a melody so simple it rewires your brain on the first listen. They made something that works, and they knew it would.

There’s something almost respectable about that level of confidence. No artistic justification, no apologizing for what it is—just pop machinery doing what it does best. The song exists to get under your skin, and it accomplishes this with complete conviction.

Now I’m stuck humming bababababa in the shower, which is exactly what Lovers Electric intended. I resent that they succeeded. I resent that I respect it.
