Mischa Barton
The O.C. worked because of Marissa Cooper, and Barton played her like she actually understood what it meant. Not the money or the looks—it was watching someone with everything slowly destroy herself anyway. Just degradation in slow motion, and Barton had the gravity to make it matter.
I followed her on Twitter for a while after the show ended. The normal thing where you keep tabs on someone who lived in your living room for years. She posted about winter tanking her mood and spring saving it. Made sense—Marissa was like that too, sensitive to seasons and time and deterioration. Barton seemed to get that about the character in a way that felt real.
That whole era is gone now. Different internet, different stars. But it was good.
