Suddenly a Trekkie

I walked into the Star Trek premiere expecting nothing and Abrams actually pulled it off. The story was threadbare but it didn’t matter—the visuals had real weight, the action moved clean, there was this energy running through it that kept me locked in. I was there for it.

This is my first Trek film, which means the purists don’t have to take me seriously, but I watched Voyager for years and I was genuinely fucking sad when they canceled it. That was a real loss. So when the hardcore fans start tearing apart the remake for desecrating the original or whatever, I get it, but I know what I felt in that theater and I’m not going to apologize for it.

I wanted more. Hours more, I wouldn’t have minded. The series idea is sitting right there—the ship, the space, whatever comes next. That’s all you need. I think it could actually work.
