Both on Repeat

Found two videos this week that won’t leave me alone.

Heart Keeps Beating is the first one, by Mariha from Hamburg. It starts sweet, almost gentle, like it’s setting you up for something, and then it doesn’t quite go where you thought it would. Not a bait-and-switch, really—just a song that knows what it’s doing and doesn’t feel the need to explain it.

The other one I’ve been listening to for weeks, completely wearing out my iPod with it. Just found the video today. Help I’m Alive by Metric, Emily Haines singing, Canadian band. When I found out there was a video, I literally climbed out of the bathtub soaking wet just to watch it on a proper screen. The song’s what matters though. I keep mishearing one of the lyrics—thought it was about sheep instead of what it actually says—and honestly I like it more because I got it wrong. Sometimes your brain hears what it needs to hear.

Both are staying in rotation for a while.
