Better Living Through Products

You just inherited money and now you need to know what to buy. Houses, yachts, charity - or just the right products, which will somehow make you better. Maybe. There’s an honesty to that kind of thinking.

I used to read these posts back when I believed there was a formula. The right skateboard, the right watch, and you’d finally be interesting. The randomness was the appeal - explicit cartoons on decks, old iPods alongside new Android phones, Halloween costumes from a fashion brand. Nothing held together except the unspoken promise that if you had these things, you’d have coherence.

It doesn’t work. But I understood the wanting.
