Das Racist was doing something I didn’t see coming—hip-hop that was self-aware without being cynical, funny without winking at the camera. The duo understood that the best joke is the one delivered straight-faced. They made music that made you think about what hip-hop was and could be, which sounds serious until you realize half the time they were just messing around.
