All the Rowboats
Regina Spektor’s voice is wrong on purpose—Russian whispers and English monotone, melodies that barely hold together. ’All the Rowboats’ doesn’t try to be likable or pretty. The songs sprawl into weird shapes that shouldn’t work, but they do because she commits to the strangeness, sings like she’s not sure about any of it, lets that uncertainty be the song. Late at night I keep putting it on, not for comfort but for something that doesn’t pretend everything’s fine.
