Grimes

Grimes emerged from the internet in the early 2010s refusing easy categorization. Hyperactive bedroom pop, then ambient noise, then visual artist. The aesthetics kept shifting, and the visual work always mattered as much as the music—album art like CGI fever dreams, videos designed to make you uncomfortable on purpose.

What interested me was the refusal to cohere. Most artists get boxed and everything they do filters through that box. Grimes moves through aesthetics like tools, high and low mixed together. The work is restless, sometimes brilliant and sometimes unlistenable, but never optimized into formula. In an era when almost everything gets smoothed into blandness, that kind of productive weirdness feels rare.
