Perfume: Fake It

I’ve known about Perfume for a while now—three Japanese women making this kind of pop music that shouldn’t work but does. Pixelated 8-bit synths, songs about love and computers and freedom, totally unserious but sharp underneath. They hosted the Japanese MTV awards last summer, which I remember reading about and thinking, yeah, they’re still here. Fake It is the new track, and it’s exactly what you’d expect: clean, bright, a little cynical. The thing missing is a decent Japanese club in Berlin, the kind of place where you’d hear this at two in the morning and it would actually land.
