ASP
Rebellious Girls
Japanese music label Wack, part of J-pop giant Avex, is known for its quirky bands like BiSH, EMPiRE and Gang Parade. Founded by Junnosuke Watanabe in 2014, the company's mission is to give a platform to somewhat more experimental artists, but one that is trimmed for success despite their otherness.
ASP is one of the newer bandwagons at Wack, which has had to reorient itself after the breakup of the exceptional formation BiSH and is now opening up to even more alternative directions in order to keep up in the highly competitive Japanese music market. The band's first album was called Anal Sex Penis and shows how seriously they take themselves - not at all.
The band, consisting of Yumeka Nowkana, Nameless, Mog Ryan, Matilder Twins, Wonker Twins, CCCCCC and Riontown, tramples the established rules of their predecessors underfoot, especially during live performances, without completely hiding the fact that they are a cast pop punk band full of shy girls at heart, who occasionally like to sing quieter and more thoughtful notes. And it's exactly this seemingly paradoxical spectrum that sets ASP apart from the competition and gives them the rare chance to extend their otherwise rather short half-life in contrast to their countless colleagues.
