My hosting provider took the site down for half a day yesterday—the worst possible moment, naturally, since that’s precisely when some passing stranger might have stumbled across it. I’m choosing to believe it happened out of solidarity with Nintendo, whose European servers were also face-down in the dirt around the same time. Incompetence as community.

The productive outcome of all this anxiety: I redeemed 2,000 points from the Nintendo Star Catalog and ordered a Wii mousepad. A mousepad. I’ve been sitting on those stars for three years, hoarding them like some kind of loyalty-scheme miser, and the moment the internet falls apart I panic-spend them on a rectangle of foam rubber. The part that’s really going to haunt me is if something genuinely worth having shows up in the catalog next month. I won’t have the points. Classic.
