Die Mauer muss weg. The Wall Must Go. It started as a chant, then became a historical fact, then became the kind of phrase people intone in documentary voiceovers as though it was always inevitable. It wasn’t. Standing on the wrong side of it, it probably felt like the least inevitable thing in the world.
