Julia Hummer, Despite Everything

Julia Hummer is a German actress I’ve always had a soft spot for—the kind of indie-cinema face that makes you feel like someone out there still cares about making real films. So it stings a little to see her lending that credibility to a GEZ campaign, Germany’s public broadcasting fee authority whose ad work has always carried a specific flavor of institutional embarrassment. I still like her. But goodwill isn’t infinite, and I hope whatever she does next is worth the watch.
