Hayley Williams Will Ruin Your Week

Riot! came out in 2007 and I’ve been losing the argument against it ever since. Paramore are one of those bands I have no defensible case for loving—filed under pop-punk, fanbase that skews teenage, Hayley Williams with orange hair and an energy that makes you feel like you need to keep up—but the music just keeps working, and at some point you stop defending yourself.

"That’s What You Get" does that thing where the verse exists purely to set up a chorus that hits harder than it has any right to. Williams doesn’t sing it so much as insist on it. There’s something relentless about her delivery, like she’s daring you to be too cool for it. I’m not too cool for it. I’ve stopped pretending otherwise. Current favorite band. That’s just where we are.
