What Kutner Sees

French photographer Christophe Kutner makes portraits that feel unhurried—like his subjects aren’t posing so much as simply being present. He’s shot Milla Jovovich, Diane Kruger, Charlotte Gainsbourg, faces that carry their own weight before a lens even points at them, and somehow still makes the images feel private rather than performed.

The Brazil work in his portfolio is what holds me longest. Black and white, proper grain, the kind of attention to light that can’t be faked with a filter. He’s not documenting the place so much as noticing it—which is a different thing entirely, and harder to do.
