What Nineteen Can See

There’s a specific kind of photograph that doesn’t announce itself. No dramatic light, no obvious subject, no trick. Just a frame that makes you feel like you’ve been to a place you’ve never been. Marta Streng makes those photographs. She was nineteen and Polish, posting to DeviantArt, and I found her through yay!everyday, which at the time was one of the better reasons to open a browser.

What gets me is the color. Not color-graded-within-an-inch-of-its-life color but something softer and more considered—the kind of palette that suggests a specific hour of a specific day, light coming from just one direction, everything else going quiet. Within that quietness, her subjects seem genuinely present rather than arranged. That’s harder than it sounds.

I think about what I was doing at nineteen. Not this. Whatever this is—this consistent visual language, this particular way of seeing—it’s something some people develop over decades and some people just arrive with. She arrived with it.
