Black Chucks, No Apology

For years the major studios were hemorrhaging viewers to free-streaming sites—and you couldn’t entirely blame the audience, because what the industry was offering was genuinely terrible. Interchangeable performers, surgically identical, running through the same five-scene structures with the enthusiasm of someone filling out tax forms. The business had confused volume with quality and was paying for it. The old-timers saw the numbers and saw darkness.

Then Sasha Grey arrived and it felt like someone had thrown a window open.

Born Marina Ann Hantzis in California, she entered the industry at eighteen and immediately operated on a completely different frequency. The performances she gave in films like Fuck Slaves and I Wanna Bang Your Sister were transgressive in a way that had nothing to do with the acts themselves—it was the intelligence behind them. She was running her own career, on her own terms, toward her own vision of what the work could be. The industry gave her awards for best threesome, best oral sex, best group scene. She treated the statuettes the way she treated everything: as data points, not destinations.

What made her genuinely interesting went beyond the films. The covers of Vice, Les Inrocks, and AVN. The music career attempts. The talk show appearances where she refused to play either the repentant sinner or the shock-value prop—just sat there, calm, well-read, clearly smarter than most of her interviewers, and completely unapologetic. In the alternative scene she became a kind of totemic figure: proof that eroticism and intelligence weren’t mutually exclusive, that you could work in pornography without becoming its product.

She’s twenty-one in 2009. The whole persona—black Chucks, dark liner, the quiet sense that she’s read things before breakfast that most people haven’t—makes her feel like something genuinely new in the culture. I hope she makes a hundred more films. I hope every single one is exactly as deliberately, intelligently filthy as the last.
