Past Oceans, Kingdoms, Sun

Daniel was what turned me into a devoted Bat for Lashes fan—that video, Natasha Khan’s voice, the sense that something genuinely otherworldly was happening. Pearl’s Dream doesn’t hit quite as hard on contact, but it seeps in. She sings about needing to find her place, past oceans and kingdoms and the sun itself—which sounds like it should tip into the overwrought, but doesn’t, because the melody is too delicate to carry that weight comfortably. So it drifts. It searches. It never quite lands, and that’s the point.

The video matches: dark, smoke-heavy, the visual grammar of late-night MTV circa 1995. I’m not complaining. This is exactly what I want from her.
