What the Dark Carries

Night Air arrived at exactly the right moment in exactly the right year. Jamie Woon had the kind of voice that makes production choices feel consequential—warm, unhurried, carrying weight without announcing it—and wrapping that voice in something close to UK dubstep, all sub-bass pressure and negative space, was the right call. The track has a stillness to it that most music from that period was actively running away from, a willingness to let silence do work. I kept coming back to it through that December the way you keep coming back to a room where something important happened, not entirely sure what you’re looking for.
