Jónsi Heard in Full Daylight

"Animal Arithmetic" is the song that made me understand why Jónsi needed a solo record at all—why Go had to exist as its own thing rather than a footnote to Sigur Rós. Where Sigur Rós builds through accumulation, through the slow rising tide of it, this song cracks open immediately. The drums arrive like a decision already made. His falsetto doesn’t dissolve into the texture the way it usually does; it cuts through. The whole thing sounds like running toward something rather than away from it, which is not a feeling I associate with him. It surprised me then. It still does.
