Emeli Sandé recorded Daddy before most people knew her name, and it sounds like it—the kind of song you write before you’re writing for an audience, when you’re still just settling something you owe someone. Piano ballad, plainly delivered, no vocal acrobatics, no production reaching for magnitude. Just the weight of the thing itself. I put it on and it did exactly what it needed to do.
