Somewhere around this time, people started reaching for the cocaine metaphor to describe the internet—the dopamine loop, the compulsive refresh, the way you open a new tab before you’ve finished reading the last one. Cocaine at least has the decency to cost money and require a dealer. The internet is free, frictionless, and lives in your pocket. The comparison was flattering to cocaine.
