Earth Girls and the Neon They Wore

Katie Miller working in the register of Earth Girls Are Easy—the 1988 film that was less a comedy than a color argument. Geena Davis, Jim Carrey in neon alien fur, Jeff Goldblum doing whatever it is Jeff Goldblum does; the underlying premise that alien men might simply be more interesting than the ones you already know. The visual language is saturated and specific—Valley pastels, teased hair, the aesthetic confidence of people who have no idea how strange they look. Miller inhabits that frequency like she’s always lived there.
