She Made Foreskin Hoses Respectable

There’s a specific type of person the German internet produced in the late 2000s—someone who’d built three websites before anyone else had built one, wrote essays that felt personally addressed, and then vanished around the world just when people were starting to depend on her. Yeah Sara is that person.

She grew up in Hesse and left as fast as humanly possible, remaking herself as a full Berlin creature through projects like DragstripGirl and Finding Berlin and however many other things she had running simultaneously. For a while she wrote for Spreeblick, which was the closest thing German blogging ever had to a paper of record. Then she left that too, to go looking for something she didn’t quite find—traveling everywhere, arriving back in Berlin slightly worn and recognizably herself.

She’s twenty-two. She made foreskin hoses and Fight Club quotes and a devotion to Berlin that borders on pathological feel like legitimate cultural positions. That’s a specific skill. Now she’s writing for this journal, which is probably the best thing to happen here in a while.
