Felix Cartal’s debut EP World Class Driver came out in early 2011 on Dim Mak, and it introduced a Vancouver producer who understood exactly how much polish was too much. Clean electro-house with hooks just obvious enough to clear a dance floor and just restrained enough to survive repeated listening at home—which is genuinely harder to achieve than it sounds. I kept going back to it that winter for reasons I couldn’t quite articulate. Sometimes a record finds you in a specific kind of empty mood and just fits there, and you stop asking why.
