Craig Lamar Traylor, who played Stevie Kenarban on Malcolm in the Middle—the kid in the wheelchair who communicated in single words separated by labored breaths, Malcolm’s best and most loyal friend—turned out to look like an entirely normal person in his twenties, which somehow feels like a small betrayal. Not that I expected him to still be a child. It’s just that Stevie existed so completely as that specific kid that the adult version registers as almost a different person. The show ended in 2006 and left something in its wake that I still think about more than I probably should.
