Still Waiting for That Pony

Growing up, I wanted a horse more than anything. Not in the vague way kids claim to want things—I meant it, lobbied for it, dreamed about it with a specificity that should have alarmed my parents. The answer was always no, on the reasonable grounds that horses cost actual money, and I had to make do with every animated substitute available: weekend cartoons, stable visits, the complete genre of children’s novels about horses and the children devoted to them. The longing didn’t disappear so much as redirect itself.

So the concept of a Horse Party sounds to me like a long-overdue homecoming. Girl Talk, Rainbow Arabia, and Kleerup on the same night: Gillis’s dense, reckless sample-stacking, the hypnotic slow drift of Rainbow Arabia, Kleerup’s glacially paced electronic weight. That’s a real lineup. Add horses somewhere in the equation and I’m genuinely not sure what else an evening is supposed to offer.
