Cake Thrower

Steve Aoki in 2011 was making music that functioned less as music and more as a delivery system for controlled mayhem. Wake Up Call belonged to that era when he was turning festival stages into food fights—the cake throws, the crowd surfs on inflatable rafts, the sense that a DJ set was actually a performance piece about how much a stranger’s shirt could absorb. The track itself does what it does: big drops, no pretense, engineered to make you feel like you’ve been launched from something. I respected the commitment even on the nights I didn’t love the music.
