The Body at a Distance

Sandra Torralba draws sex the way it often actually feels—not as a triumph of contact but as a kind of persistent, beautiful estrangement. The Barcelona illustrator’s work is gestural and bold, bodies rendered in confident lines and charged color, but there’s always a gap somewhere, a space between figures that desire doesn’t fully close. "Estranged Sex" names the feeling precisely. Looking at her illustrations, I kept thinking about how intimacy is often most present in the moments just before or just after—the reach, the looking away, the half-second where everything is still possible or already past. She draws that half-second well.
