What the Machine Gave Back
Kate Bush wrote "Deeper Understanding" in 1989, which means she wrote a song about compulsive attachment to a computer interface years before most people had a computer worth attaching to. The narrator is lonely in the specific way of someone who has quietly given up on other people—she turns to the machine, and the machine, in its patient way, turns back. The song never judges her for it. That restraint is what makes it strange.
The 2011 re-recording for Director’s Cut replaced the original vocal layers with her son Bertie’s voice as the computer, which adds a dimension the original didn’t have and can’t quite shake off. Bush has always understood that what people really want from technology is permission to stop trying with other humans—and that this is neither triumph nor pathology, just a fact about loneliness that nobody wants to say out loud.
