The Camera That Stayed

Angela Boatwright has been documenting the margins of American underground music long enough that her photographs have started to feel like historical record even when they were taken recently. Suicide Practice fits into that lineage—her work tends toward the unglamorous, the half-lit corner of a venue where something real is happening and she happens to be standing there with a camera. The title is pure punk logic: practice as rehearsal for self-destruction, or self-destruction as the only honest way to stay alive. Either reading holds.
