She’d been signed to Capitol since she was practically a child, cycling through producers and label politics while scraps of songs leaked out—enough to suggest something genuinely strange trying to surface, a pop sensibility bent sideways, a voice that sounded bored in the best possible way. "One" was getting played everywhere in early 2012, and the As If! EP had hinted at a direction that kept being redirected. Sky Ferreira was a promise that kept getting deferred, and watching that was its own kind of fascination.
