King Krule was barely out of secondary school when he started putting music out—Archy Marshall, Bermondsey, a voice that sounded forty years older than his face, guitar playing that borrowed from jazz and post-punk and whatever private damage produces that particular tone. Portrait in Black and Blue felt exactly right as a title: something between a police report and a painting, the whole project worn openly on the skin.
