Five Hands on One Guitar

Five people sitting in a semicircle, all their hands on a single acoustic guitar at once. That image alone would have been enough—but Walk Off The Earth actually played it, all five of them simultaneously, covering Gotye’s Somebody That I Used To Know. The video landed at exactly the right moment, when that song was already everywhere and people were hungry for something that made them feel clever for loving it.

The Gotye original is already good—a breakup song with that particular quality of making the wronged party sound insufferable while being completely right. Walk Off The Earth’s version doesn’t improve on it emotionally; it replaces complexity with joyful stunt work, and the stunt is genuinely impressive. Watching five people negotiate a single instrument without losing a finger is its own kind of satisfaction.

It racked up views faster than almost anything that year. That specific early-2012 viral quality: a real performance, a real song, no editing tricks. Just a band with a very good idea and the timing to pull it off.
