The Smartest Joke in the Room

Das Racist occupied a strange position in early-2010s hip-hop. Heems (Himanshu Suri) and Kool A.D. (Victor Vazquez)—plus their hype man Dap—were simultaneously the funniest and most deliberately exhausting act going, making music that could sound like a shrug and hit like an argument. The reference density was almost pathological: a single bar might hold a fast food chain, an obscure anime nod, and a genuinely filthy punchline, delivered so flatly you weren’t sure if they were being lazy or brilliant. Usually both. Girl sits in that same territory—casual on the surface, doing more work underneath than it advertises. They broke up in 2012, which felt about right; that level of sustained ironic commitment has a natural lifespan, and they got out before the joke collapsed under its own weight.
