Sky Ferreira in 2012 occupied a genuinely odd position—too cool for pure pop, too glossy for indie, too young to be pinned down and seemingly aware of it. "Everything Is Embarrassing," produced by Dev Hynes, had landed earlier that year and was one of those songs that sounds inevitable in retrospect, like it always existed and you’d simply missed it. The album was still a year away. In the meantime there were photos and videos and the general impression of someone in the middle of becoming something specific, not quite there yet—which was, honestly, its own kind of interesting.
