Running From One to the Next
Lover to Lover sits in an odd place on Ceremonials—most of that record is drenched in cathedral reverb and the particular kind of grief that likes to dress up as joy, but this track moves differently, almost propulsively, the drums refusing to let you settle. Florence Welch has always written about desire as something that consumes rather than satisfies, and here it’s specifically the restlessness between people—moving through rooms and bodies without landing anywhere. Not a happy song. But one of those that makes being unhappy feel like forward motion, which is its own kind of gift.
