There’s no clean moment I can point to when Kate Upton happened to me. It wasn’t a single image that rewired something—more like she accumulated, one photograph at a time, until she was simply the most compelling person in whatever room she occupied, regardless of the room. The Terry Richardson beach shoot. The Guess lingerie video. The Ken Jeong photobomb at some basketball game, where she laughed and the whole internet briefly went sideways. Somewhere in that sequence she stopped being a face I recognized and became a specific obsession, the kind that’s difficult to explain without sounding either earnest or embarrassing. I’ll go with both.
Alasdair McLellan photographed her for Vogue UK’s December 2012 issue and the results are what you’d expect when an interesting photographer meets a genuinely interesting subject: something worth staring at longer than you’d planned. She looks fantastic. She always looks fantastic. That’s the complete sentence. I don’t have anything more analytical to add and I’m not going to fake it.
