What the Camera Refuses to Soften

The usual agreements between photographer and subject—flattery, a comfortable distance, the performance of being observed—don’t seem to apply to Tierney Gearon’s work. She catches people mid-thought, mid-exposure, in states they didn’t consent to performing. The "Hollywood Heroines" series turns that eye toward women from the entertainment industry and finds, predictably, that what remains once the promotional armor comes off is something far more interesting than anything it was protecting.
