Freaky Is the Whole Point
Die Antwoord’s video for I Fink U Freeky is one of those things that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into someone else’s ritual. Shot in stark black and white by South African photographer and filmmaker Roger Ballen, it features Ninja and Yolandi Visser alongside their extended crew in what registers as part performance art, part document of a subculture with no real Western equivalent—faces painted, bodies moving wrong, the visual language sitting somewhere between outsider art and the specific underground Cape Town aesthetic they’ve built their entire identity around. The song itself is raw and repetitive and hits harder than it has any right to. But the video is the thing. You don’t really un-see it.
