Everything After Asha

Nobody else made music quite like Tjinder Singh. Cornershop built their career on a collision that shouldn’t have worked—British indie guitar pop and Punjabi musical traditions, folded together in a way that managed to feel neither like world music nor like novelty. Brimful of Asha was so huge, so relentlessly remixed and overplayed, that it nearly swallowed everything else they’d made. Who’s Gonna Lite Up comes from a period when Singh was quietly reasserting that the band had more to offer than their one nuclear hit—music with that same ease of synthesis, working without needing to prove anything to anyone.
