Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All weren’t really a rap collective—they were a managed chaos event with good taste in beats. Tyler, the Creator at the center, Earl Sweatshirt freshly returned from whatever punishment school they’d sent him to, Frank Ocean orbiting the whole thing with quiet devastation. In 2012 they were simultaneously the most exciting and most exhausting thing happening in music: the shock tactics were real, but so was the craft underneath, and that tension between genuine menace and teenage absurdism was what made them impossible to ignore.
