In 2012, Rihanna could do something as objectively infantile as sucking her thumb in a photo and make it feel vaguely threatening. That was her whole register that year—Talk That Talk still in rotation, the tabloids still chewing on her personal life, none of it seeming to cost her anything. The image made the rounds and people lost their minds, which was more or less the intended effect.
