Ashley Smith, Between the Trees

Ashley Smith has a quality in photographs of being somewhere else entirely—her attention is always on something outside the frame, and that something is invariably more interesting than whatever the camera thinks it’s capturing. Forest light suits that. It’s unreliable, breaks across surfaces unevenly, and does half the composition work on its own. Whatever In The Woods was, it sounds like the right setting for her.
