M.I.A., Bad Girls, Saturday

It’s Saturday and the Social Experiment remix of M.I.A.’s Bad Girls exists, which means you have no legitimate excuse not to be playing it at a volume that makes the walls vibrate and the neighbors reconsider their weekend plans.

Bad Girls was already one of the best things she’d made—the original video alone, all drifting cars and rooftop posturing in the desert, compressed the whole M.I.A. aesthetic into four minutes: simultaneously political, ridiculous, and genuinely cool, which is a register almost nobody else can pull off. The Social Experiment version doesn’t deconstruct what worked; it finds a different frequency in the same track and rides it into the floor. Less a remix in the academic sense, more a room-specific tool—the kind of thing that only makes sense at maximum volume with your shirt already off.

I might be overstating it slightly. Probably not, though.
